About

“Whatever the inspiration, the element of chance is important to my process to foster spontaneity and surprise. Titles are always a cohesive element and color—with the many emotional nuances it affords—is key!”

Marjorie Morrow is an abstract painter who resides in NY’s Upper Delaware River Valley, relocating her studio there permanently in 2018 after fifty years in Manhattan. A graduate of Miami University, Oxford, OH, with a BFA in painting and printmaking, she participated, under visiting artist Richard Anuszkiewicz, at the first Blossom-Kent art program in Cleveland, OH. She has exhibited her paintings and prints since 1968.

2026 Upstate NY Studio

“My paintings are about energy and freedom, gestural interpretations of what I see/feel in the whole of my environment. While my work is abstract, it is inspired by many sources—music; literature; and the contemporary cultural, environmental, and political climates. And even as an abstract painter, my work draws inspiration from the natural landscape.”

1985 with “Bright Nights, City Lights” 96 x 76 inches

2021 Exhibit with “Cascading Pine” & “Blues Suspension” Nutshell Arts

2014 Ceres Gallery, NYC with “Fly” 60 x 72 inches

“I began incorporating the frottage process of rubbing/relief into my paintings around 2011, juxtaposing textures of industrial, human-made grids and meshes with organic textures such as tree bark. In their mark-making and application, the paintings relate to my earlier printmaking work, especially etching/intaglio and woodcut. I work on unstretched, raw canvas to achieve the textured surfaces. Each painting becomes a kind of monotype.”

Morrow’s mixed media includes acrylic, charcoal, pastel, oil stick, colored pencil, and sometimes collage, on canvas. She works in series, and in a variety of sizes, ranging from 6 x 6 inches to 6 x 6 feet.

Special projects and collaborations include her “9/11: Response and Reflection” in 2011—a 3-minute video that can be viewed here—and Art Orbit, an online presentation she created to feature collectors of her artwork.

2011 Installation of 9/11 Pastel Drawing Series at Drew University, Madison, NJ
